Task Force 72

Probably the most popular era for models in Task Force 72 is WW2, especially given the sheer number of Flower Class corvettes that have been completed.

A personal best for Task Force 72 is 17 in one place at one time, most out on the water at the same time.

After corvettes, the most popular subjects are destroyers, with many of the combatant navy's represented, as can be seen here.

Task Force 72

It is interesting how models flow in and out of popularity.

Two decades ago the most popular models in the club were RAN Destroyer Escorts and their sister ships in the Royal Navy, South African Navy and Indian Navy.

Then it was Ticonderoga class cruisers, together with their near sisters the Spruance class destroyers and the Kidd class DDGs. A large number of these were started and most finished.

Naturally, the RAN's FFGs and Anzacs have been popular models and all three of the RAN's new Hobart class air warfare destroyers have already been completed, long before the real things.

The most recent class to attract attention is very different, with the very large Ulstein A101 anchor handling and salvage tugs proving very popular, with almost a dozen hulls acquired by Task Force 72 members.

The hull for this tug is available from Southern Cross Models here in Australia and is up to their usual impressive standard, accurate, strong and well crafted.

I am sure that the numerous models that are currently under construction will one day take their place at future regattas.

Task Force 72

Task Force 72 members build a wide variety of subjects, all in the same scale of 1:72, but that doesn't mean we don't appreciate stunning work in other scales, such as this model of the carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72) by Kostas Katseas. ...

Task Force 72

OTD (14 Feb 90) The then Minister for Defence, Kim Beazley, announced at the keel laying ceremony for HMAS Collins that five more Type 471 submarines were to be built for the RAN.

They would be named Farncomb, Waller, Dechaineaux, Sheean, and Rankin.

The Collins class submarines got off to a rocky start, but following upgrades, 'get well' programs and operational experience, they have grown to become extremely capable submarines, the equal of any conventional submarines currently in service.

They will continue to serve the nation until replaced in the 2030s by the Attack class.
