Task Force 72

The Fletcher class was a class of destroyers built by the United States during World War II. The class was designed in 1939, as a result of dissatisfaction with earlier destroyer classes. Some went on to serve during the Korean War and into the Vietnam War.

The United States Navy commissioned 175 Fletcher-class destroyers between 1942 and 1944, more than any other destroyer class, and the design was generally regarded as highly successful.

Fletchers had a design speed of 38 knots and an armament of five 5" guns in single mounts with 10 21" torpedoes in two quintuple centerline mounts.

The long-range Fletcher-class ships performed every task asked of a destroyer, from anti-submarine warfare and anti-aircraft warfare to surface action.

They could cover the vast distances required by fleet actions in the Pacific and served almost exclusively in the Pacific Theater of Operations during World War II, during which they accounted for 29 Imperial Japanese Navy submarines sunk.

In a massive effort, the Fletchers were built by shipyards across the United States and, after World War II ended, 11 were sold to countries that they had been built to fight against: Italy, Germany, and Japan, as well as other countries, where they had even longer, distinguished careers.

Three have been preserved as museum ships in the U.S. and one in Greece.

Task Force 72

The Royal Navy moved through the 1930s building the same sort of destroyers that it had finished World War 1 with, somewhat larger versions of the V&W classes.

There were differences but all were roughly similar, as epitomised by the last of these types of destroyers, the 1300 ton I class. They were armed with four 4.7 inch guns in single open mounts, two five tube torpedo launchers, a pair of depth charge throwers, and a single rack right aft, with a brutally inadequate AA armament of two quad machine gun mounts.

The discovery of the Japanese Fubuki-class destroyer was a massive shock to the British, here were 2,000 ton destroyers armed with three twin 5 inch gun turrets and three triple torpedo tubes, larger, faster and more heavily armed, the RN's destroyer fleet was hopelessly outclassed.

The powers that be determined that 'Something Must Be Done' and that something were the 16 iconic Tribal class destroyers of the Royal Navy, together with their sisters operated by the Royal Australian Navy and the Royal Canadian Navy.

They were built emphasising gun power, with initially four twin 4.7 inch gun mounts, later modified for better AA defence, a single quad torpedo mount and were much larger, almost 2,500 tons at full load, than their predecessors

They shouldered much of the early war load, taking fearsome losses and together they formed the most famous destroyer class in Royal Navy history.

Task Force 72

Probably the most popular era for models in Task Force 72 is WW2, especially given the sheer number of Flower Class corvettes that have been completed.

A personal best for Task Force 72 is 17 in one place at one time, most out on the water at the same time.

After corvettes, the most popular subjects are destroyers, with many of the combatant navy's represented, as can be seen here.
