Flagship of the RAN

Post by RussF172 »

It has been announced that the new HMAS CANBERRA will become the new "Flagship" of the RAN. The RAN has not really had a dedicated flagship for some years. As she is fitted with additional communications and additional compartments to carry a flag officer (Maritime Commander) she will carry this extra role. STALWART was the last ship so fitted with a command and control capability (I was on her then and it was fitted in her old Seacat missile magazine) and that was only after the carrier MELBOURNE was retired in 1982 which was fitted for this purpose with an Admiral's Bridge and Operations room (Flag Plot) and cabins etc for his staff. The duties will probably swap between CANBERRA and ADELAIDE depending upon the operations and who is going where.
