RAN on way to RIMPAC 2016
A shot of the RAN contingent for RIMPAC 2016, Canberra, Success and Ballarat
The tiny-looking LCVP (ex-Tobruk maybe?) parked on the flight deck gives a good idea of the scale of Canberra
Canberra is programmed to conduct cross deck operations with Marine Corp helos and Harriers while at RIMPAC, looking forward to seeing those images, not just because so many self-appointed Journalist experts said it couldn't be done without expensive alterations to the ships, ignoring the fact that with Principe De Asturias now retired, Canberra's sister ship Juan Carlos is now the Spanish Navy's carrier.
As an aside, you can really see the difference between Storm Grey on Success and Canberra and Ballarat's Haze Grey in these images

Believe they have Viper/Cobra and Harrier trials still to go on this bit of the exercise. Looking forward to seeing that.

Nice Matt, any video coming of the ESSM firing? It would be good to see multiple ones launching.
Any time with the carrier ?

Re: RAN on way to RIMPAC 2016
Its been great. Tiring, but great. The only issue is as the OPSO, you dont really get a chance to sit back and really appreciate the hardware around. Not to mention at Pearl because of the briefings.
However, I have been exposed to the likes of USS John C Stennis, USS Princeton, USS Shoup, USS William P Lawrence, USS Mobile Bay, USNS Henry J Kaiser, USNS Rappahannock, FS Prarial, CNS Cochrane, KRI Dippinagoro, INS Satpura, RSS Steadfast, and HMCS Calgary to name a few just in our little task group.
I did have a small amount of time during the briefings to get to the USS Missouri with my camera. The memory disc wasnt large enough though.
Im not sure about the bandwidth so Im trying the smaller video to see how it goes.

Ballarat's double VL Sea Sparrow launch
"Two evolved sea sparrow missiles are simultaneously launched from the Royal Australian Navy Anzac Class frigate HMAS Ballarat (FFH 155) as part of a live fire exercise."
RIMPAC is superb for offering the capabilities for live fire exercises, the capabilities are unmatched in this half of the world.

We are in the CVN Task Group, however, haven't been that close. About 3 nm has been the closest. For some reason, this year, they are keeping us, and all others away except Mobile Bay, the CG.

Re: RAN on way to RIMPAC 2016
Bugger. Probably has lots to do with the CO.
Always remember once when on HOBART as the acting CPOSY our skipper got me to send a signal to the USS RANGER to ask if we could come up to their port quarter at 1000 yards to observe their next flying cycle. About 10 mins went by until we got a signal back saying negative! Bugger we all thought. About 5 mins later RANGER sent us a signal to join them for the next flying ops in 30 mins and to take a position on their port beam (as they were launching a large number of aircraft and would be using both their bow cats and waist cats and then recovering the earlier launched aircraft). They then changed the distance to 250 yards. Had to get them to check that that was right as we weren't supposed to get closer than 1000 yards to them. Nope, that was right, 250 yards, so off we went. Spent about an hour cruising along side them at 25 knots getting deafened by the scream of F-14Ds, A-6s, EA-6Bs and a couple of Hawkeyes. Had a couple of "bolters" also which was exciting as when they ran through they rolled out in front of us. Got some great photos of it.

Re: RAN on way to RIMPAC 2016
Had the same experience with Independence back in 93. we took up station 300 mtrs of her port beam to watch flying ops the dropped back as plane guard . we spent six days with the battle group from Darwin to Fremantle. Hobart, Canberra and Torrens were also in company. I was on Swan and for an old ship we were the only ones that had no problems keeping up with the carrier. We hit rough weather and all can together again and sailed into Freo together. Was a memory i will have for a long time. It's a good thing we are friends that fire power at sea is very impressive.

God help them if they are ever delusional enough to believe that and miscalculate badly enough to put that to the test.

Glen,
I was on HOBART then too. I think it was just after Exercise Kakadu in 93. It was great hanging with the Carriers.

Nice video showing HMCS Vancouverwith HMAS Warramunga coming alongside USS Rappahannock for a three ship RAS.
Passing lines, connection and pumping followed by disconnecting lines.
Some nice detail shots for anyone building a City class frigate.

Re: RAN on way to RIMPAC 2016
Another video, taken from a helicopter showing Pearl Harbour crowded with RIMPC particpants.
What stands out is that four ships dominate this view, the carrer Stennis, the amphib America, the Japanese 'helicopter destroyer' Hyuga and HMAS Canberra, they dwarf the rest.
Also in this video is the 'mothball fleet' located in the Middle Loch, including two LPA's, at least six frigates, a LST and a group of other cargo vessels.
Worth a look.

A salient reminder that we should have bought Cobra Zulus rather than stuffing about with the Tigers, which are apparently never going to meet the original specifications and will be paid off early. If nothing else, the Cobra's are marinised straight out of the box, something Tiger conspicuously is not.
