Hobart, the first of Australia’s three new Air Warfare Destroyers, left the shipyard today to begin her initial Builder Sea Trials. The second ship is due to be launched in December, and the third is about half-built. (AWDA photo)

This September, the Air Warfare Destroyer Project enters an exciting new phase with Hobart commencing its first series of sea trials, Builder’s Sea Trials. This phase will demonstrate the functionality of the ship’s propulsion, maneuvering, auxiliary, control and navigation systems.

Following Builder’s Sea Trials, in early 2017 Hobart will undertake Category 5 (CAT5) trials to test and demonstrate the ship’s more advanced systems and the combat system performance.

Hobart will conduct Builder’s Sea Trials off the coast of South Australia over several days in September. Throughout this period the ship will be operated under the command of a civilian Master and crew, augmented by specialists from the Alliance and key equipment suppliers who will perform the system testing and trials.

Before the ship is put to sea, the AWD Alliance will conduct a comprehensive assessment to ensure the safety of the ship, embarked personnel, the environment and other seafarers. This assessment is defined as the Alliance Sea Trials Release Process and has three major steps; the Sea Worthiness Assessment, Ship Sea Trials Release and Sea Readiness Confirmation.

During Builder’s Sea Trials, whilst the ship is at sea, a dedicated shore support team will remain in constant communications with the Ship’s Master to assist the ship and ensure the success of the trials.

In the lead up to Builder Sea Trials the AWD Alliance continues to complete a number of important alongside dock trials - testing the ships systems before it departs to sea for the first time. Tests include Inclining Trials, measuring the ship’s stability and vertical centre of gravity, and Bollard Trials, testing the ship’s propulsion system.

She looks...interesting with that massive topside structure.

I still think we would have been better off buying some of the latest batch of Burke's from the US production line and instead spending some of the ridiculous amount of money we've spent on the three Air Warfare Frigates on a range of capabilities that have been placed in the 'if only we had the money' basket.

We could have acquired four Burke's for $6 Billion, they'd be in service now and still have had three billion left for a range of other capabilities.

Ah well, what's done is done and it will be interesting to see what changes they make to the RANs operational capabilities.

Australia’s first air-warfare destroyer, the future HMAS Hobart, has completed its builder’s sea trials, which tested its hull, propulsion and navigation systems. A of trials in early 2017 will test its combat and communications systems. (AWDA photo)

Today marks the successful completion of ship builder sea trials for the future Air Warfare Destroyer Hobart, at Techport Australia in Adelaide.

The Minister for Defence Industry, The Hon Christopher Pyne, MP, said this achievement is a significant milestone for the Air Warfare Destroyer Project and the nation, and demonstrates the capacity of Australia’s sovereign defence industry to build and integrate ships for our specific defence needs.

“Hobart has now proven its hull, propulsion and navigation systems after several days of testing in local SA waters,” Minister Pyne said.

“Further sea trials will take place in early 2017 when Hobart conducts more advanced testing of the ship’s combat and communications systems.”

Progress also continues on the second destroyer Brisbane, with the loading of combat system equipment prior to launch in December 2016, while hull consolidation on destroyer Sydney is well underway.

“I congratulate the AWD Alliance partners; the Commonwealth, ASC and Raytheon Australia on this important milestone today, and their continued progress toward delivering the most capable warships ever to be operated by the Royal Australian Navy.”

First Destroyer Hobart Successfully Completes Builder Sea Trials

(Source: AWD Alliance; issued September 24, 2016)

Today, the Air Warfare Destroyer Alliance achieved a major milestone with the successful completion of Builder Sea Trials for the first destroyer Hobart following several days at sea off the coast of South Australia.

AWD Alliance General Manager Lloyd Beckett said that sea trials were the commencement of an exciting new phase for the Air Warfare Destroyer project.

“This first phase of sea trials, conducted over several days in the local South Australian waters, marks the successful testing of the ship’s hull, propulsion and navigation systems. A second phase of more advanced trials will take place in early 2017 when Hobart trials its combat and communications systems,” he said.

The successful completion of Hobart’s Builder Sea Trials represents a decade of dedication and effort by the AWD workforce on one of the most complex shipbuilding projects in Australia’s history.

“It’s the culmination of years of design and procurement, construction and outfitting, system testing, training and equipment activation. It gives me an enormous sense of pride in seeing our hard work culminate in a successful trial period at sea,” said Mr Beckett.

Significant progress has been made on the AWD project and destroyer Hobart to reach this milestone with the ship build commencing in January 2010, hull consolidation in March 2014, and official launch - when the ship floats for the first time - in May 2015.

AWD Alliance Program Manager, Commodore Craig Bourke also expressed his satisfaction: “The completion of Hobart’s Builder Sea Trials is a significant step towards delivery of the first AWD to Defence and the most capable warships ever operated by the Royal Australian Navy.”

“The AWD Alliance team of shipbuilders and systems integrators can take great pride in attaining this major milestone of sending our first AWD to sea and successfully completing its platform trials,” he said.

Over the coming months, further progress on the AWD Project will be demonstrated when the second destroyer Brisbane enters the water following its launch in December 2016, as well as hull consolidation of the third destroyer, Sydney, in August 2017.

The AWD Alliance, consisting of shipbuilder ASC, combat systems integrator Raytheon Australia and the Government’s Capability Acquisition and Sustainment Group, offered their congratulations for the successful completion of Builder Sea Trials on the ships return to Techport:

“Today is a day when everyone who works in Australia’s highly skilled and professional naval shipbuilding industry can stand tall and be immensely proud. Sea Trials is a visible demonstration of our success as a shipbuilding team,” said ASC Shipbuilding CEO Mark Lamarre.

“Moving forward, the highly skilled ASC workforce will continue to consolidate and outfit the remaining two destroyers Brisbane and Sydney, implementing lessons learnt from Hobart’s build along the way, and creating significant improvement in our nation’s shipbuilding capability,” he said.

Raytheon Australia Managing Director, Michael Ward, also acknowledged the successful completion of Hobart’s first phase of sea trials.

As the combat systems integrator for the AWD project, Raytheon Australia has applied its highly skilled Australian workforce of architects, systems engineers and project managers to the AWD project over the last decade.

“Raytheon Australia is responsible for the design, delivery and integration of the AWD Combat System which comprises ten major subsystems, and more than 3,500 major pieces of combat system equipment. This sophisticated combat system contributes to making AWD the most advanced and lethal warship ever operated by the Royal Australian Navy.”

“We look forward to Hobart’s continued success on sea trials next year when the AWD’s advanced combat system is tested.” Mr Ward said.

Following completion of further sea trials in early 2017, the Air Warfare Destroyer Alliance is scheduled to deliver Hobart to the Department of Defence in June 2017.

The AWD Alliance is responsible for delivering three Hobart Class DDG destroyers and their support systems to Defence. The Alliance is made up of shipbuilder ASC, mission systems integrator Raytheon Australia and the Government’s Capability Acquisition and Sustainment Group.
