Spanish Ship sets sail

Post by RussF172 »

The Spanish Navy’s Álvaro de Bazán-class frigate Cristóbal Colón is scheduled to embark on a long-term deployment to Australia on January 9.

Under an agreement between the two navies, the Aegis-equipped frigate will spend 120 days in Australia where it will help train future Australian Hobart-class destroyer sailors of the Australian Navy.

By integrating into the Australian Navy fleet, Cristóbal Colón will provide dedicated training and familiarisation opportunities for the crews of Australian destroyers Hobart, Brisbane and Sydney.

NUSHIP Hobart, the first of three destroyers, will start category 5 sea trials in mid-January 2017 and will be assisted in the process by ESPS Cristóbal Colón.

If everything goes according to plan, the Spanish frigate is expected to return to Ferrol, Spain in early August 2017.

This is not the first time a Spanish Navy ship is integrating into the Royal Australian Navy. Back in 2013, Spain sent its replenishment ships ESPS Cantabria to Australia where it remained for eight months.

Quality customer service that is.

Hoping to lock in the ASW version of the F100 for the future frigate project I would suspect.

Frigate ‘Cristóbal Colón’ (F-105) arrives in Australia.
The purpose of the deployment is to collaborate in the training of the new Australian ‘Hobart’-class destroyers.
Monday, February 20, 2017

The Spanish Navy’s most modern escort, the F-100 frigate ‘Cristóbal Colón’ has just arrived at Perth (Australia) for a 120-day deployment integrated into the Royal Australian Navy (RAN).

During the 10,300-mile transit towards Australia, the F-105 participated in NATO’s anti-terrorist operation ‘Sea Guardian’ and the EU operation ‘Sophia’ against human trafficking in the Mediterranean Sea. After crossing the Suez Canal, the ‘Cristóbal Colón’ also took part in the counter-piracy operation ‘Atalanta’ in the Indian Ocean.

The transit was also used to conduct combined exercises with the navies of Italy, Saudi Arabia, India and Malaysia with port calls in Jeddah, Mumbai and Singapore.

Today, February 19th, the frigate ‘Cristóbal Colón’ arrived at Rockingham and was greeted by the Australian Fleet Commander, Rear Admiral Stuart Mayer. During the welcoming ceremony, the operational command of the ship was officially transferred to the Royal Australian Navy. As of today, the F-105 is fully integrated into the RAN.

The ship will remain in Rockingham for a few days participating in the coordination meetings prior to the two-week CJTF exercise ‘Ocean Explorer 17’ to be conducted in Western Australia. This Combined Joint Task Force will have different naval, air and land elements from Australia, New Zealand, the United States and Spain.

This will be the first of a series of advanced exercises intended to enhance the strategic association and interoperability between the Spanish Navy and the RAN. The F-105 will also provide training to the crews of the new ‘Hobart’-class anti-air warfare destroyers (AWD). To this end, forty RAN servicemen will integrate into the crew of the Spanish frigate.

The ‘Cristóbal Colón’ is scheduled to visit the ports of Fremantle, Adelaide, Sidney, Brisbane, Cairns and Townsville.

Yes, a sore point over here in the west, Adelaide and her are actually in Fremantle port now and are not opening to the public.

Think of it, the RAN's best PR opportunity in the last decade in WA is berthed right in front of the public in Fremantle (one of the busiest places on the weekend), and because of her size Adelaide is bit hard to hide.

Yet nought, zero, zilch, nada, nothing. Not opening at all.

Yes I hear you Rob
I went down this morning. On the off chance they may be open for the weekend but not to be, they may as well be berthed at HMAS Stirling they can hide it down there. Considering this is the fist time one of the LHD's has visited Freo perfect time to show Joe public what there taxes buy and build. I got closer to the lead ship of the F100 frigates when i lived in Spain you could walk up to the ship and walk along its's length at it's berth. Those days have gone thanks to terrorism and the security measures now put in place. I don't know how often LHD's will call in to the West but it wont be that often i'm thinking.
Cheers Glen

I spoke to a mate on ADELAIDE and they were told that families of WA natives couldn't visit without a lot of prior approval. Groups such as Scouts, Naval Associations or groups from WA based ships weren't invited to have a look. Not good PR at all.

Spanish frigate Cristobal Colon arrives in Sydney

Image
Spanish Navy’s Aegis-equipped frigate Cristobal Colon arrived in Sydney on Friday as part of her role in preparing Australian Navy sailors for the operation of Australia’s first Aegis destroyer Hobart.

The frigate was escorted into Sydney Harbour by Royal Australian Navy ships Darwin, Melbourne and Parramatta.

Commanding Officer Hobart Captain John Stavridis said the opportunity to embark in Cristobal Colon presented an opportunity for the Royal Australian Navy to prepare Hobart and the Navy for the effective operation of the destroyers.

“Being able to train with the men and women of the Cristobal Colon is invaluable as it will provide knowledge and insights that will complement the extensive training provided as part of the introduction into service process,” Captain Stavridis said.

Hobart will be the first of three destroyers delivered to the Royal Australian Navy and will be commissioned into service in September this year.

The destroyers are based on the Navantia-designed F-100 frigate and share significant platform similarities with Cristobal Colon. The Armada has been operating the class since 2002.

The Royal Australian Navy will embark 40 sailors in Cristobal Colon for the duration of her deployment.

During her stay on the east coast, Cristobal Colon will take part in two major exercises led by Australia – Sea Explorer and Sea Raider.

The exercises are designed to develop the Navy’s joint littoral combat capabilities across the full spectrum of maritime operations and provide realistic scenarios for the crews.

Cristobal Colon initially arrived in Australia in February to take part in Exercise Ocean Explorer off Western Australia.

The exercise was designed to train the fleet in high end war fighting and involved 13 warships and five aircraft from Australia, Italy, Spain and New Zealand, including Darwin.

Commanding Officer Darwin Commander Phillip Henry said Ocean Explorer had achieved its aim of combining separate naval units into effective fighting task groups.

“Throughout the operation all units were identifying new ways to increase the task group’s efficiency and effectiveness, resulting in a battlefield effect that allowed the task group to punch well above its weight,” Commander Henry said.
