USS Ford

Some good footage of Flying Trials aboard the USS Ford, and an insight into the issues that can arise when introducing new technology. All to be expected with such a complex machine, but not understood by the wider populace sometimes. Once up to speed, the Ford will be a formidable asset.

As a side note, I read once that when the GD F-16 Falcon first came into service, it got the nickname 'the Plough', due to the number of aircraft that crashed. Now it is considered one of the most successful multi-role aircraft of all-time, with over 4,500 produced for service around the world with 25 Nations.

In a similar vein, I will point out that the F14 Tomcat crashed on its first flight.

Wasn't Ford the one who kept tripping over things? Not a good omen for the ship.

Hope they get the issues worked out before commissioning the most revered name in the United States Navy; CV80 USS Enterprise.

Incidentally, Enterprise is one of only two names that have graced three carriers. The only other is HMS Ark Royal.

The last Ark Royal, the Invincible class carrier, was the 5th ship in the RN to bear the name, while CV80 will be the 9th USN ship to bear the name.

Enterprise.
USS Enterprise (1799), a sailing vessel that fired the first shots in the First Barbary War
Enterprise (1814), a steamboat that participated in the Battle of New Orleans
USS Enterprise (1831), a sailing vessel
USS Enterprise (1874), a sailing vessel
USS Enterprise (SP-790), a motorboat (1917–1919)
USS Enterprise (CV-6), an aircraft carrier (1938–1947) that served in World War II, most decorated ship in US Navy history
USS Enterprise (CVN-65), a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier (1961–2017)
USS Enterprise (CVN-80), third ship of the Ford class of aircraft carriers; scheduled to be constructed and in operation by 2027

CV6 Earned:
The Presidential Unit Citation
The Navy Unit Commendation
The American Defense Service Medal with "Fleet" clasp
The American Campaign Medal
The Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with twenty stars
The World War II Victory Medal
The Philippine Presidential Unit Citation

The Philippine Liberation Medal and the only ship of any other navy to be granted the honour of wearing the Royal Navy's British Admiralty Pennant

Battle Stars
Pearl Harbor
Pacific Raids
Battle of Midway
Battle of Guadalcanal
Capture and Defense of Guadalcanal
Battle of the Eastern Solomons
Battle of Santa Cruz
Naval Battle of Guadalcanal
Battle of Rennell Island
Gilbert Islands Operations
Marshall Islands Operations
Asiatic-Pacific Raids
Hollandia
Mariana Islands Operations
Western Pacific Operations
Invasion of Leyte Island/3rd Fleet Operations
Luzon Operations
Night Carrier Group 90/5th Fleet Raids

Ark Royal
Ark Royal (1587), the flagship of the English fleet during the Spanish Armada campaign of 1588
HMS Ark Royal (1914), merchant ship, converted to an seaplane carrier during the First World War
HMS Ark Royal (91), British aircraft carrier launched in 1937 that participated in the Second World War and was sunk by a U-boat in 1941
HMS Ark Royal (R09), an Audacious-class aircraft carrier launched in 1950, decommissioned in 1979
HMS Ark Royal (R07), an Invincible-class aircraft carrier, launched in 1981, decommissioned in 2011

Unlike the USN the RN carries Battle Honours over from ship to ship bearing the same name, thus the name Ark Royal bears the Honours;
Armada
Dardenelles
Norway
Spartivento
Mediterranean
Bismark
Malta Convoys

Incidentally, for comparison, the most battle honours won by an Australian vessel, not surprisingly, are born by HMAS Sydney. Between them, vessels named HMAS Sydney have been awarded fourteen battle honours, including two of the only three battle honours awarded in the 20th century for an action involving a single opposing ship:

Rabaul 1914
Emden 1914
North Sea 1916–18
Calabria 1940
Spada 1940
Mediterranean 1940
Kormoran 1941
Korea 1951–52
Malaysia 1964
Vietnam 1965–72
Kuwait 1991
East Timor 1999
Persian Gulf 2001–03
Iraq 2003

The guy down in Tassie who it hand carving SYDNEY V's new honour board will be charging extra for that lot. Lots more battle names on there than any other RAN ship. Interesting read, thanks Mike.

With five ships bearing the name you'd hope that there's some history there.

The two Australia's amassed ten, the two Hobarts nine honours as have the three Perths, Vendetta suprisingly nine as well on her own. Both Stuart's amassed eight, both Voyager's seven, Shropshire seven (RN and RAN both) and the Vampire's six.
