Paint

Postby pgreenhalgh » 12 Feb 2016 12:46

Hi all,
I am a new member and just starting out with RC modelling. I am building HMAS Derwent and having trouble finding light grey paint (ship side grey). Can any one let me know the make up of SSG including the tint ratio for 1 litre.
Appreciated

Hi Peter
The paint name is storm grey code N42 Australian standard. Most auto motive paint shops can make it up for you they have it on there data base. Storm grey as they call it and it is the right tint has a light green tint to it if you compare to other navies ship side grey. Hope that helps.

Cheers Glen

My local AutoPro shop will mix it up in spray cans for you, about $30 a can, but it's exactly the shade you want.

Ask for Australian Standard N42 Storm Grey, they will have the book that tells them what combination of tints is required to make it up for you.

Normally they give you what's left over in a small tin, perfect for touch ups and small parts.

Peter,

It depends on the year you are making her. Storm Grey was only used from 1985. Prior to that the RAN used BS381C 631 Light Grey as their colour.

Any Mitre 10, Dulux shop etc. can make it up as they all have the British Standard colours.

Decks were BS381C 632 Dark Admiralty Grey.

regards,

Michael

Hi Michael,

I know you have done the research on the paint colours but I was on MELBOURNE from 1980 until her retirement in 1982 and she was definitely Storm Grey as were the other ships of that time including the FFGs which came out from 1981 until DARWIN arrived in 1984. All I can think of is that it may have been known as a different name. We always referred to it as Ships Side Grey. I don't recall it being called Storm Grey until some years later so maybe that is where it is different.

Russ,

All I can think of is that it may have been known as a different name. > I think you are right, it was known as a different name, Light Grey. :) Storm Grey is derived from Light Grey. Refer back to the CLD 19 Jan 2015 Article. Storm Grey and Light Grey share the same base and pigments except that, for a 1 litre mix of paint, Storm Grey has twice as much pigment as Light Grey. Seen on a model by itself in Light Grey, you would think it was Storm Grey. Seen next to a model which is painted Storm Grey, the difference is obvious as Light Grey is lighter and not as green as Storm Grey.

Just asked a contact in the marine paint industry if his records show when Storm Grey was first listed in their stock books and supply lists.

Hi Peter, What era is " Derwent " . If you are building her as she was back in the 60"s / 70's , the Ships main colour is as the Darings which is
Light Battleship Grey , Code " BSC 631 " , with the deck colour Dark Admiralty Grey " BSC 632 . I have HMAS Vampire as she is in Darling Harbour , as I served on Duchess & Vampire , and these are the colours they were painted.

Per International Paints records, Storm Grey dates from 1985.

Scott,

From an Italian Modelling mob:

Hull Antifouling is Carmine Red RAL 3002
Superstructure  is Silver Grey  RAL 7001
Deck is Blue Grey  RAL 7031
Flight Deck is Anthracite Grey   RAL 7016

I contacted Dulux and they can mix RAL paints these days. Just in case, the formulae are attached. They are for 1 litre of Dulux only. If you use anything other than their base and tints, you will get the wrong colour. They have Dulux Trade Shops here and our local Mitre 10 can make it, so yours should too.

Also, in NSW we have Autolac who can mix any standard paint in a range from a company called De Beer. For about $30, you get a spray can of the colour which is touch dry in about 5 minutes. I've actually sprayed, masked over the top and sprayed another colour inside the hour without any adverse effect. They are car paints and many of the European manufacturers colours are RAL. I asked about the greys and they were used by Volkswagen, Audi and Mercedes in the past.

Could you email to me a couple of photos of her and I'll send them to the guy. They are fascinated that this neck of the woods is building an Italian warship.

For anyone building modern German ships, their colours are:

Hull and superstructure: RAL 7000
Decks: RAL 7012.
