USS William D. Porter (DD-579) as modified by Charleston Navy Yard to the five twin 40-mm mounts and seven 20-mm guns configuration. Preparing to head back to the Pacific in September 24 1943

Image

On 10 June 1945, William D. Porter fell victim to a unique—though fatal—kamikaze attack. At 08:15 that morning, an obsolete Aichi D3A "Val" dive bomber dropped unheralded out of the clouds and made straight for the warship. The destroyer managed to evade the suicide plane, and it splashed down nearby her. Somehow, the explosive-laden plane ended up directly beneath Porter before it exploded. Suddenly, the warship was lifted out of the water and then dropped back again, due to the force of the underwater blast. She lost power and suffered broken steam lines. A number of fires also broke out. For three hours, her crew struggled to put out the fires, repair the damage, and keep the ship afloat. The crew's efforts were in vain; and, 12 minutes after the order to abandon ship went out, William D. Porter heeled over to starboard and sank by the stern. Miraculously, her crew suffered no fatal injuries.

Hi Mike I think the date may be wrong for the Long Beach. Her configuration with harpoons and the 49 radar on the mainmast may be 1980"s.

Akitsu Maru, 1944. The Imperial Japanese Army operated escort carriers, some claim this ship, with her sister Nigitsu Maru may be the first types of modern amphibious assault ships.

HMS Phoebe arriving at Belfast on 24th June 1942. She had HM King George VI and HM Queen Elizabeth onboard for a visit.
She was one of my Grandad's Ships during World War 2, and he was aboard when these pictures were taken.
He was a Royal Marine, and joined her at the Builders, Fairfield, on the 9th September 1940. He left her on the 2nd July 1942. All up, he served for exactly 24 years.
He was a gentle Man, who no doubt saw and experienced many wonderful, and dreadful things. I loved him dearly.

As we spoke before Nige my grand father was also on HMS Phoebe for the duration of WW2 they would have shared the same experiences. Most notably would have been torpedoed of the Verde islands West Africa. They suffered sixty odd dead and many injuries, of a crew of around 700. After making repairs so the ship could get to a ship yard Phoebe sailed 10'000 km's across the Atlantic with a 10mtr X 3mtr hole in her side. She dry docked at the Brooklyn navy yard In New York and 10 months latter headed back to the Med. A small world we live in some times.

Yes, that is Amagi, suffering the fate of pretty much the entire Japanese fleet at war's end, sunk in harbour without enough fue to sail.
