Sunday was a very successful Sail Day at Albert Park Lake.
Eleven members came along and enjoyed the day with several of their ships and boats on display. There were also many onlookers.
The weather was fine and sunny with a light Southerly breeze that stiffened up in the afternoon.
The star of the day was Nick Jankovic's new battlecruiser HMS Renown.
A few smaller craft commenced the sailing, but the floating weeds took their toll on the boats and Smit Rotterdam had a short sail before re-entering port with clogged Kort nozzles.
We put down markers to measure the boat speeds at 1/72 scale, and a few of the ships had a go including Kim's Invincible and Nick's WW2 frigate. Ed Galea & son Robbie had an early sail of their 04 Frigate. Ed's monitor Marshall Soult is still under construction but painting cannot be far away.
There was a stiff breeze once you ventured out further from the jetty and Kim's Invincible unfortunately ran foul of a few waves, and proved not to be "invincible", stalling while out at sea.
Eventually she drifted into the morass of cut weeds at the North end of the lake and with a combined team effort we managed to rescue her including the ship's band. An admiralty investigation was carried out (by Merv) and established - Somewhat reminiscent of the HMS Hood - that a single wave had taken out the control system including the bilge pumps, (water had entered the receiver) and left it floundering.
After the BBQ lunch we gathered for a group photo, and then the major sailing began.
Merv Sailed Cornwall and then we moved the launching device to the floating pontoon as the water level had dropped due to the recent dry weather.
KGV and then Renown were launched and sailed in formation. Z39 also sailed in the choppy seas.
A video of these is now available on Youtube.
