Sub Regatta 2011 -Central Coast - brand new (non TF72) event
We all know about the fantastic Sub Regatta held in the ACT every two years and hosted by the ACT Model boat club.
Now there is a new complimentary event for the in between years.
Triple S Model boat club in association with a small band of hardcore sub modelers are proud to announce that commencing in June 2011, there is a Sub Regatta on the NSW Central Coast.
This could eventually be held every two years, enabling submariners to have access to, along with the ACT Sub Regattas, a dedicated Sub Regatta every year.
Planning has been in the pipeline for many months and as you can see by the attached information flier its bound to be a ripper of an event.
We have an entire 50m swimming pool for our exclusive use, and the complete permission by the pool management, council, and Triple S insurers, for the use of various modeler's non explosive VLS systems and torpedoes.
The 50m pool with no other pool users will easily accommodate flank bell runs. Personally I can't wait for another Crazy Ivan run with Jim Russell - how many times have you lost your SSN sail Jim?
I cannot wait for Brad Van Epp's Typhoon, (formerly Carl Linkenbagh's), and it's enormous screws to hit full RPM over some distance!
The official flier only came through tonight but I understand we already have 5 firm bookings / registrations from QLD and 3 from NSW. We have tried to cover as many bases as possible, food, accommodation, -the works, so have a read and check it out.
Should be a great event and we can only hope to try and emulate the great times had by the superb hospitality and management of ACT hosted Subregatta's.
The event is not a Task Force 72 event. It is open to all those modelers with radio controlled model submarines of any scale. If you are interested please see the attached information flier herein about registration and fees payable.
Match bearings and shoot
A big thank you to Dr David Batagol for lots of hard work to make this event possible.

Re: Sub Regatta 2011 -Central Coast - brand new (non TF72) event
You are aware that this date clashes with the annual Wagga Carriers and Escorts weekend at the Oasis Leisure Centre, which for the last few years has been scheduled on the June Long Weekend?
I understand that the sub drivers have been pressing for a run of their own and as you have noted in the title this is not a Task Force 72 run.
I am sure that there is only a small amount of crossover between potential attendees at the two events, so it should not be too much of an issue.

yes we are aware. Given that this event is like the ACT Sub Regatta, the main expected attendees will be past participants of that event. In fact most of the registrations thus far fit that category, and are not members of TF72. Given these attendees come from all across Australia (and judging by the interest in registrations some from Europe too), a long weekend is pretty much the only time to hold it. Added to that limitation, is getting an entire Olympic pool for our exclusive use. This constraint pretty much rules out peak swimming months and leaves pretty much the only time we have is the time we have.
As this event is not a Task Force 72 event, I would hope that this is not of any concern that the Submarine Regatta clashes with predominantly a Model Boat event some several hundred kilometers away.
Its posted here "for information only" as quite a few TF72ers have subs and / or enjoy the ACT Sub Regattas and may wish to choose to come to this one. I am quite sure this event will not detract from the excellent Model Boat weekend hosted by Wagga.
Like the ACT Sub Regatta, this regatta invites and is open to individuals - not clubs.
As you would know, David, I and others, have been trying for some time to access more submarine friendly locations in the Sydney Area or to the North of it, and or to either establish a Submarine running day location and / or a regatta. As David and I are both members of Triple S, and Triple S have some submariners within their ranks, Triple S has been very encouraging for another Submarine Regatta to occur and are right behind this event. The club assistance afforded by them to get this up and running has been terrific. In fact we have 5 people fully registered from QLD, and another 2 from Victoria.
Its early days but its a promising situation that guys who run RC Submarines will have an annual Sub Regatta they can attend. There are quite a few in the Sydney / Illawarra / Central Coast that don't belong to an club, as they find a lot of the standard model boating venues are unsuitable. For most people with RC subs, lake sailing is usually confined to the shore line, periscope depth, and a crawl, and the ever present stress of being run over. An Olympic pool allows the submarine to be driven pretty much at any depth and at any speed without loosing site of it. Having a Sub Regatta and not having to worry about abundant surface traffic enhances the experience, as does a location, organisation, and insurer that fully permits the use of non explosive torpedoes and VLS systems within the boundaries of users regular safety protocols.
So I really don't think it will be an issue.
The Wagga TF72 event will continue to be a great success. Who knows in years to come we might have a different weekend again to the one we were able to get for this one.
Cheers
J

Spoke to Jim Russell tonight, looks like about a turnout of 20 for next weekend, a great start to a brand new event, with people coming from 4 states.
If you are thinking of wanting to come for a look see or to run a sub do join us. Late registrations can be taken on the day.

Here are some photos from Saturday 11 June at the inaugural Central Coast Submarine Regatta. It was a sensational day with some fabulous model submarines on display.

Just back now, many hours stick time over the whole weekend, fantastic company and 27 subs hitting the water, and not a killjoy insight. A great dinner catchup and chalkboard discussion Saturday night and steady precession of interested on-lookers coming by for a chat.
The pool management were terrific, as were the accommodations.
Thanks for posting Carl, more photos coming in the next few days after people make the long trip home.
A big thank you to Triple S, it may be QLD based, and it might only have a small handful of submariners amongst its 110 members, but it has a generous core- hosting this event some 800kms from its base.
With country members joining from Sydney and Central Coast, we plan on having a few more runs at this amazing location throughout the year as running day afternoons. Indeed the two main questions by local visitors, were - how do get started?; and when are you coming back?
An ideal sub location -we had sunny skies Saturday, and as the monsoon hit Sunday morning the subs still were on patrol, with operators in the undercover grandstands making the most of elevated dry vantage points.
A terrific time and a long list of thank-you's - David B, Jim Russell, Brad Van Epps, et.al, and enormous thanks to all those who made the long trips especially from NT, Vic and QLD.
-Where there is a will - there will always be a way. The goodwill and good cheer by all that had a hand in organising and participating in this weekend, will long be remembered as what can be achieved when a few are willing and able to make an effort and see something worthwhile through.
BZ to all of you.

Three 1/72 subs:-
Brad Van Epps Typhoon being surrounded by David Batagol's LA (USS Greenville) and my latest sub USS Pogy (Sturgeon class).
-Lots of Pogy photos, its the first time I have photographed her underway, all these were shot as I drove, -I'm shamelessly delighted that this sub's high degree of automation allows me the luxury of taking photos whilst she is underway!
Pogy transitioning to static dive state
Pogy surface running
Nice bow wave Pogy
Periscope depth Pogy - the ballast setup I have dialed in here allows even a complete beginner to run at PD without broaching - in fact I had a line up of visitors helming her too. - Happier than a pig in poo!
Pogy and Brad's Typhoon:
Dr David Batagol's amazing LA USS Greenville - DSRV carrying and packing working Tomahawks
Typhoon observed surfaced on the Horizon Greenville's orders take her out.........Tomahawks at the ready

Re: Sub Regatta 2011 -Central Coast - brand new (non TF72) e
Ballasting her right is the key- so that I have the COG positioned bang on the COR (centre of rotation), - doing so makes the pitch controller work so much more effectively. I took a lot of extra time ballasting this boat and shed all unnecessary material. At flank bell she is the faster sub I have ever put together, her carbon fibre prop is superior to brass too. -Faster acceleration and sustained speed. This sub eclipses all Alfas I have had, and those boats were underwater jet fighters. This sub is also very maneuverable.kimwhite wrote:John, great photos. I also set the boat up slightly positive - so that at 1/4 ahead I can transition to PD - (periscope depth) on her sail planes. Once there I can leave the throttle where it is, bring the sail planes back to neutral and just steer or throttle beyond 1/4 ahead. It means I can run at PD all day. Only exception is hard over helm commands or running at 2/3s ahead plus and turning, as the slight axial role induced requires a yank and bank response to over ride the pitch controller. That said as pitch control (rear planes), and rudder are on the same TX stick, it means once dived you simply can drive on this one stick in cruise mode, leaving the throttle on the ratchet and only tweaking the forward planes on the dial channel if you want a depth change.
As for the nightmare - Its interesting Kim, the hardest thing I have observed about subs Kim is they become difficult when people head off on an economy drive. (I am guilty of this too). But the fact remains the greatest mistake people keep making with subs is to think that inventing their own take on a ballast system will save you cash. Model boaters like myself are the worst new entrants to subs, as they build their first sub like a model boat. If I had all the receipts for all the gear I put in place BEFORE biting the bullet and buying purpose built parts, I could have paid for the purpose built parts a few times over. Sub operations for me use to be a mix of sailing, and extensive pit time in fault finding and fixing. My last 250 hours at the helm I have had ZERO problems whatsoever with the ballast systems I have switched my whole fleet to - Merriman / Caswell Subdrivers. They don't leak and the system is simple to assemble, build, and maintain.

Re: Sub Regatta 2011 -Central Coast - brand new (non TF72) e
Hi Scott,
it was great - my Collins is long gone, a collector got her sometime ago.
hows that Permit coming along?
- it shares the same Carbon prop I ran on Pogy, and very very similar hull shape, it should be a fun boat.
I ran just the one boat Pogy, as Seawolf did not make it in time.
The great news for subs is that the Australian dollar is so strong, and in addition the WTC parts are also cheaper.
There are also heaps of new 1/72 Subs kits in final stages of production - mainly modern types, I'll post here as I get updates
The star of the weekend was the pool, only 1 extremely small signal drop out area and that was 3.5m down (scaled that is 827 ft in 1:1 scale), but only around a third of the theoretical crush / flooding depth of my WTC. So interference free sailing all weekend which was great. The pool was deep enough too to run flat stick 2m down and still have error room, as a high speed crash into a concrete pool bottom can ruin your whole day.
I test fired by hand only a handful of torpedo shots Sat with the plan to do heaps more Sunday, but the rain Sunday meant sailing from the grandstand. If i was poolside doing that Sunday, I'd have been drenched.
I still have more to do with the torpedo system yet, I now have the latest evolution of launcher in from the US, and now its all about improving all at the poofteenth level the weight distribution of the weapon running in the water.
Pat Drake fired lots of Torpedoes Saturday, in fact David Batagol and I were shadowing Brad's Typhoon early Sat Am, Pat slipped up behind me and fired two very accurate fish at Pogy, by the time I cranked open the throttle the shots were on me and by some miracle holding a dead straight course they shot by either side. He then had another go on my next circuit of the pool and as I dived under him thinking the threat was gone he emptied the stern tubes too. Lots and lots of patrol time for all who attended. I don't recall a regatta where I have so many hours at the helm.
We are really delighted with the pool and its management - wonderful people and we hope to be back there again soon. Feedback we have thus far is the pool were extremely happy with us and will gladly have us back. For a first up run with questionable weather we had a great turn out. Bit of bummer that we had a clash with the excellent time on down at Wagga, - great venue and people there too.

Re: Sub Regatta 2011 -Central Coast - brand new (non TF72) e
Perhaps, given the established position of the Carrier & Escorts Weekend on the Queen's Birthday Long Weekend in Wagga, the October Long Weekend may be a possible alternative time for the NSW Sub Regatta, that way members are not forced to choose between attending one or the other.JohnSlater wrote: Bit of bummer that we had a clash with the excellent time on down at Wagga, - great venue and people there too.

as per my original post on this, it will depend on a number of things mainly being whether we can get that pool at other times - winter is best as the pool usage of other users is at its lowest.
The event as you know is not just utilised by TF72 members and is not necessarily a NSW Sub Regatta either, we cater for all scales of subs and we have had people from interstate come along, so we have a pretty diverse group of people to consider. The October long weekend unfortunately is also only a public holiday in SA, NSW and ACT. Given that Victorians, and Queenslanders made up over 50% of attendees that weekend would be problematic.
Now that Triple S has established a good rapport with the pool management and council we can try and establish Triple S running days there too for the growing number of Triple S country members. (In fact we picked up some more members through holding this event). These running days will be I expect not whole days, but more like afternoons. In this regard we have no intention of rocking the boat and ignoring the TF72 calendar of events and will try to avoid clashes, but we can't guarantee this, as we are largely in the hands of the pool operators getting us a slot of time, and also looking at days convenient first to our members.
Please also bear in mind at this stage, our intention remains what it was pre this regatta, and that is to run this regatta every two years, not annually, and do so at a time that maximises the attendance of all Australian Sub enthusiasts, not just TF72 members. So if a clash perpetuates it might be those people wanting to attend both could rotate their attendance at one each alternate year. I guess clashes will ultimately in some capacity eventuate, but rest assured we will consider club's, and not just (TF72), key events and try to avoid them. As it stands Triple S Model Boat Group remain as the organisers of this event. This weekend works well for our club with key participants travelling from Queensland. I am sure you will agree we can try to avoid clashes but it won't always be possible.
I am very glad the Wagga weekend was very successful for the club and its members. Wagga always puts on a good show, and the weather was kind too.

This batch of photos just in from Dr Dave Batagol
Scary stuff - Dave's Tomahawk - well it does look like a WWII German V2 and unfortunately from this angle it could be a flying sex toy , but is very very cool technology nonetheless and I love it. Packs all the punch of Nerf toy. Takes a lot to fly VLS from a submerged state and Dave has had many years of perfecting it.

Hope so mate - and with those "new" 1/72 scale kits coming out - the next few years are going to see a virtual flood of choice in our scale.
You'd be very welcome.

Thanks Bruce,
it was a very good time indeed.
If I can get to the Regatta I might have the Sea Wolf running or in a close to finished state.
