Indo-Pacific 2022 images

Post by MikeJames »

A combined group of Fleet Base Sydney and Hunter Central members participated in the Indo-Pacific Maritime Exposition at Navy's invitation. The event was held over the 10-12 May at the Sydney International Convention Centre at Darling Harbour.

The display, featuring some 40 models, was a big hit with the attendees, attracting interest from uniformed and civilian defence personnel, as well as the commercial exhibitors.

There were plenty of commercial models on display, even if numbers of models were down on previous years.

Austal.

A proposed derivation of the Cape class, 60 metres long, with a space for a Schiebel Camcopter drone to operate from the stern, and a large Interceptor RHIB operated from a stern cradle.

The UAV and RHIB can be seen here.

Austal was also pushing a slightly longer Cape class derivative.

A bit closer.

The RAN's newly ordered Scheibel Camcopter Unmanned Aerial Vehicle was seen everywhere, with two examples of the real thing and plenty of models sporting one on the flight deck.

The Arafura was everywhere, everyone was either involved in the project, or trying to supply it.

A grab bag of other models seen at the Expo.

20220511_094829.jpg

A Sigma corvette from Damen shipyards

20220511_094721.jpg

RSV Nuyina, the replacement Australian Antarctic Research ship which replaced Aurora Australia.

20220511_095009.jpg

Sir David Attenborough, the Royal Navy research ship, the name chosen by a poll of the people of the UK.

20220511_095450.jpg

The Mayflower 400, a 3D printed model of an Unmanned Surface Vessel that was actually sailing from the UK to Boston via the Azores and Caribbean during the show. You could see the ship's radar picture, the view from cameras on board the ship and a complete real time view of the ships speed, course, fuel consumption, environmental conditions such as the sea state and wind, everything you'd have on the bridge, monitored from the UK, US and Sydney.

20220511_102745.jpg

A Virginia class, one of the two contenders for the RAN's SSN class.

20220511_102858.jpg

An Independence class Littoral Combat Ship of the US Navy

20220511_103918.jpg

A LCM-1E landing craft, built by Fleet Base Victoria's Haig Jansz.

20220511_103931.jpg

A Hobart class DDG (apparently they are no longer to be referred to as an AWD). Honestly, not a patch on the DDGs that our members have built.

Hi Mike,
This is the first time I have seen the LLCM since I delivered it to Navantia a few years ago.
This was it in the back yard. Navantia never sent me any photos of it on display. I was very disappointed.
It was 1/35 scale so we could mount the Abrams tank.

The HMAS Hobart AWD model was built in Argentina, displayed in Adelaide during construction of the real ship and then transported to Melbourne by truck. It was in a cabinet that fell over en-route and was very severely damaged. I was offered the task of repairing/rebuilding it.
These are a few of my photos of it after the re-build. it is 1/100 scale.

While rebuilding it I corrected some differences to match photos of the real ship vs the original Navantia plans, as well as adding and enhancing some detail items such as the RHIBs, loading crane, crew etc.
I am a bit disappointed to read the comment - "Honestly, not a patch on the DDGs that our members have built."
At least I know it to be more technically correct and matches the real ship more than the 1/72 model photos I looked at during the re-build.

Regards

Hi Mike,

Next to the DDG (AWD) was another model, a Smart 8000, a 8,000 tonne concept destroyer. Reverse azipods for main thrust and retractable azipod for a bow thruster.

What I mean Haigh, is that it was showing wear and tear compared to our members models, it's obviously had some indifferent handling since it was upgraded by you.

Hi Guys,

Here is a couple of comparison shots of a TF72 supplied WW2 LCT with the Serco "Oboe" and the "Oboe" with the Navantia model.

Saw that Navantia model of the Smart 8000. It first appeared in the media about 6 months ago.

The gun mount and missile bays are both supposed to be hidden under hatches, which will be needed as those areas will be very wet most of the time, and in rough seas the areas both occupy will get a lot of water breaking over them.

I talked to a Navantia guy who basically admitted that it was designed to look good and attract media attention, which it did, and if anyone actually wanted to order the real thing, all the weapons would be moved far back, basically ahead of the bridge, with the gun fixed in position, none of this vanishing under hatches stuff.

The HOBART model that Navantia had on display wasn't the one repaired by you Haig. It was a relatively new one they had done in Argentina once again. Same as the LHD. It was a new one also. I think your one is still in Melbourne's office. It was showing some signs of damage from the trip once again.
