Last of the "Magnificent Seven" is gone

Post by rritchie71 »

The Soviet era Kara class are all finely gone.

Originally known as “The magnificent Seven” The Kara’s were cold war era cruisers, during the 70’s and 80’s at the height of the cold war they were a real problem for the Western Navies to handle.
By the late 90’s they were obsolete and only the Kerch remained active (commissioned in 1974). During a maintenance period in November 2014 she was damaged by fire.

It has now been announced that due to damages sustained in the fire she will be decommissioned and scrapped, TASS reports citing sources in the shipbuilding industry familiar with the matter.
Russian Defense officials decided to scrap the KERCH as it would be too expensive to overhaul and retrofit the outdated warship. The name “KERCH " could be assigned to one of the new ships of the Russian Navy. The sources said the ship will be scrapped in 2015 at one of the Russian shipyards. Most likely, it will be one of the defense enterprises based on the Crimean peninsula, but not The 13th Shipyard.
