Historic Naval Images

Post by MikeJames »

Hi guys, I know I run the 'Shot of the Day' and 'The Old RAN' image feeds, but this thread is for images of older warships of any navy.

There are some great shots out there.

The German light cruiser Emden in Honolulu, February 1936.

The thing I really like about this from a modelling perspective is how much reserve buoyancy is on show above the water line. Compare this to a US nuke that has typically about 9-11% reserve buoyancy where the WL is about halfway up the casing again.

Here's HMS Valliant in 1986 - the Valliant boats are almost completely externally identical to the Churchill class (to which Conqueror belongs) that succeeded them. The Churchills class is also known as "Improved Valliants"

HMS Warspite, hard aground on rocks after refusing to go quietly to the breakers, this battle-scarred veteran of two world wars went on her own terms, running aground under tow in 1947 on rocks near Prussia Cove, Cornwall, and was eventually broken up nearby.
