2.4 ghz module installation for Futaba F-16

Hello

I was wondering if there are any members out there who have experience of converting a Robbe/Futaba 40 mhz F-16 to 2.4 ghz? I have a ‘hack’ module by Frsky, the current XHT version, but was interested to draw on member’s knowledge before I do anything rash. I am using the F-16 in a twin stick setup for independent throttle control. Ideally, a switchable set up, between 40 mhz and 2.4 ghz is what I am seeking to achieve.

Cheers

Hi Stephen
yes looked into this...decided not worthy of upgrading as I run subs and Mhz radios are rare and or expensive.

I think a better way is the Flysky i6 or i10 Radios.
If you want dual throttles - Bruce Stevens and I have just installed this 3D printed dual throttle module on a Turnigy i4x, Flysky i6, and a Flysky TM-10

- contact the seller -Sydney-based who has been very helpful.

If you need multi-channels like the FC16 - I can't recommend the Flysky radios enough just use the i6 or TM-10 and pick up a 10 channel RX.

Here's some photos of my conversions to the dual throttles.

Yep - I do use lots of channels - VLS fire control on my FFG...

10ch Rx that is compatible with the Turnigy ix4, Flysky i6 and TM-10 Txs

Hope this helps.

Well that was easy!

I already have the Turnigy TX, I have just ordered the twin stick through the ebay seller, time left over for a beer!

Thank you very much for this advice as I am very happy not to ruin a very nice and basically brand new F-16 TX. What a wealth of knowledge there is in the club.

Cheers

Happy to help Steven. Bruce Stevens first drew my attention to these units. Agree - re the FC16 - even though the 2.4GHZ conversions do have the ability to switch back to the MHZ band - I didn't want to attempt this with such an expensive, and now almost impossible to get, Tx.

Installation is pretty simple too. After taking the back off TX, Just a matter of unplugging the single plug to the gimbal unit and unscrewing the 4 screws. Swap stick unit over, screws back in, plug in and test.

Just waiting for some decent weather on a weekend so I can test the throttle response with HMS Iron Duke

Ok, so its all done. In the end I decided to buy a Flysky i6 rather than convert the Turnigy Tx as I am already using that to control another boat. Installing the twin stick in the Flysky was the work of 10 minutes, just removing the back, removing the single stick and replacing it with the twin, following the instructions in the video. I have installed the receiver in the boat, reset the ESCs to the new Tx and tested throttle range. Everything works as advertised. All up, 30 minutes from start to finish.

The one change I have made to the twin stick is to drill a hole in the handles and insert a sliding metal locking pin, as per the Robbe twin stick, to make it easier to keep the motors synchronised when operating on rudder alone.

Thanks again for the steer on this - its great to have the boat running on 2.4 ghz and no more worries about interference or stealing valuable frequencies from the model sub community.

Cheers

Steve

Glad it worked for you Steve

I'm thinking of putting a pin through too!
