Where do the Canberrans Sail?
Hi all (Future) fellow Canberrans,
Suzy and I will be moving down there very early next year., and I was curious where do you all sail? If you don't mind sharing details like where, what the place is like (wind, size, depth, water clarity, salinity, etc)
Cheers,
See you next year!
Dave

I was depressed last night, so I rang lifeline. Got a call centre in
Afghanistan and told them I was suicidal.
They got all excited and asked if I could fly a plane.

Re: Where do the Canberrans Sail?
Hi Dave,
I've just moved to Canberra myself and am officially now a Fleet Base Canberra member....so I'm happy to answer your questions.
We generally sail on Lake Ginninderra on the water adjacent to Diddam's Close just across the water from Belconnen. It is a great little spot adjacent to a park with full facilities (ie BBQ, toilets, play equipment for kids, plenty of shade etc). The venue is very suitable for models of all sizes, and submarines in the shallows if the water is clear. We are hosting the 2011 Regatta there for the first time on the weekend of 03-04 December.
Lake Ginninderra is fresh water and an ideal location to sail models. It is naturally protected so the wind is usually not a problem (even if it is a windy day). The only downside is that being Canberra, the water can get a touch on the chilly side, but again this is not generally an inhibitor to enjoying the venue even in the winter months. Just don't make the mistake I did one May running day and turn up in boarshorts and thongs because you'll regret it when you are thawing out your toes!
Fleet Base Canberra also participate in the annual Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) open day where we sail on the indoor pool (its a terrific day - the event is this coming Saturday 27 August 2011) and we also travel wherever possible to support other Fleet Bases, particularly Wagga Wagga which is about 2 hours down the road.
There are several outstanding and award winning models in Canberra which is always a treat as well with several projects either planned or underway.
Additionally - the ACT Model Boat Club hold an excellent event once every 2 years celebrating all things relating to model submarines. This isn't a Task Force 72 event - but many of our members attend and it is well worth a visit if you are interested in model submarines.
We'll look forward to seeing you next year. David Peterson is the I/C of Fleet Base Canberra - don't hesitate to get in touch with him (or any of us) if you have any queries.
Regards,
Carl

Hi all
It looks like Fleet Base Canberra will be gaining a few new members. I have also been posted to Canberra and expect to be there in January 2012. Looking forward to catching up and sailing with the locals.

FB Canberra is really coming of age now. I thougth you might end up in Canberra Steve. Where are you going to? Dave you'll have to come down here if you like 4WDing. We're only 2.5 hours from Canberra and have all the forestry tracks to tear around on plus all the mountains, loads of free camping areas too.

Russ
Not exactly sure where I will be working as I will be going to a newly created position in Canberra. At this stage it looks like either R8 in the Russell complex or Bridabella Park. Haven't even thought about looking for somewhere to live yet.

I managed to kill both main motors on my DEFIANT, so now she doesn't go very well.MichaelB wrote:Dave,

Re: Where do the Canberrans Sail?
Hi Members,
Fleet Base Canberra is proud to announce there new sailing location.
FBC NEW RUN LOCATION
FBC now is operating at a superb new location in the South of Canberra. The site is the “Duck Pond” at Fadden Hills on Bugden Avenue. It is a great location and the locals really like us being there. We have our runs on Mondays between 0830 and 1230. Anyone interested in joining in will be welcome but we ask that you let Dave Peterson, Peter Cole or Bob Murdoch know that you are coming. Attached is a view of the Duck Pond where our feathered friends politely move out when we arrive, coming back in force when we leave.
Regards
David P.

Hi Robert,
My understanding is that it is most Mondays, that is why David suggests contacting them first to make sure somebody will be there on the day.
